White Noise Machine

The free relaxing music and nature sounds on this website have been carefully chosen for their ability to aid sleep, reduce stress, and provide a relaxing atmosphere for activities such as yoga, tai-chi, and meditation. Rhythmic drumming creates a hypnotic effect to help induce sleep. The sound of the vibraphone is calming, and may reduce stress. Rain acts as a white noise machine that masks household noises such as refrigerators, heaters, and creaking floors. The booming sound of thunder helps to mask loud stereos, barking dogs, and traffic. The sound of steady, rhytmic ocean waves provide a sensation of relaxation and calm. Birds and windchimes are comforting sounds that provide a relaxing and stress free atmosphere. An atmosphere of rain and thunder may be especially relaxing, because one feels they cannot go out to work. Ocean waves may remind one of a relaxing and calm vacation. Experiment with the online program to create your personal sleep-aid or relaxation tool. Check out

Shiny

This bright, playful exhibition (on view at Wexner Center Galleries until 31 December 2006) examines our culture's love of luxury, spectacle, shiny things, and our own reflections. Many of the works in Shiny play with the ommodity status of art, both embracing and slyly critiquing conspicuous display. You'll watch Andy Warhol's helium-filled Silver Clouds floating sensuously on air currents and see yourself and the Wexner Center's architecture reflected in the shimmering surfaces of Jeff Koons's 10-foot-tall Balloon Dog. 'Asian American Art Now'

'One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now' (on view until 10 December 2006 at Asia Societry in New York) brings together seventeen artists from across the country who challenge and extend the category of Asian American art. The title of the exhibition, inspired by the 1970s Blondie hit, suggests that there has never been a formulaic way of making or seeing art, either back then or now. Instead, these artists initiate a new set of conversations that highlight the multidimensional ways of conceptualizing and producing art today. The works in the exhibition, many of them made especially for this show, reflect this energy. Together, the artists and their work defy a definitive conception of Asian American art in favor of working one way or another. Here for more of

'Chaos into Light'

Included in this solo exhibition by Valerie Ng are oil paintings as well as mixed media pieces of collage or papier-mache which extend the tactile qualities of the artworks. "Based on the chaos theory, that one slight change might cause a significant impact elsewhere thus the act of painting goes with layers of subtle additions that build up to form a whole. In the process, never quite knowing where each mark will lead or what effect it will have on the overall state." On view at Instinc, Singapore until 30 September 2006. More on Valerie Ng's

The Future of Media Activism
Much ink has been spilled in recent years about the failings of our corporate media system. And about the real, life-and-death consequences of these failings-- the war in Iraq being only the most obvious example. What is just now becoming clear, however, is how profoundly this situation has affected the public's trust of the media, as well as how it's beginning to pull together existing strains of media activism into a movement that parallels other great social movements of our time, like environmentalism, feminism and civil rights. The mainstream media is no longer providing us with the information we need when it matters most... Here for Adbuster's

How to destroy the earth

You've seen the action movies where the bad guy threatens to destroy the Earth. You've heard people on the news claiming that the next nuclear war or cutting down rainforests or persisting in releasing hideous quantities of pollution into the atmosphere threatens to end the world. Fools. The Earth is built to last. It is a 4,550,000,000-year-old, 5,973,600,000,000,000,000,000-tonne ball of iron. It has taken more devastating asteroid hits in its lifetime than you've had hot dinners, and lo, it still orbits merrily... This is a guide for those who do not want the Earth to be there anymore. Creative Commons explained...

"Maybe you've never seen of it. Maybe you've started catching glimpses of it in the most unexpected of places. Maybe you've even considered using it yourself, but never knew for certain what it really means. We're talking about the Creative Commons symbol, that rather inconspicuous "double C" that's been quietly ushering in a whole new paradigm for thinking about intellectual property. If you don't quite understand why that is— or even, in all honesty, why you should care about intellectual property— then we've got something just for you..." Here for more on
